Connecting with Ourselves

coaching mindset Jun 28, 2020

Are you feeling more introspective than usual these days?

It’s been said in various places, including social media, that the COVID-19 pandemic is making us all take stock of our lives, both individually and as a society. For many of us, it’s forced us to slow down the frenetic activity that we pack into our days. Not being able to gather together with our friends and extended families has given us extra time to re-connect with ourselves (whether we wanted to or not!)

For some, this has been a welcome opportunity to go inward, and to really ponder whether we like the trajectory we are on. I’ve heard a number of people say they want to make changes going forward – some minor, but some quite significant.

Spending more time at home is leading some to rediscover the joy of home-cooked meals eaten together as a family. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few new bakeries open up when all this is over, if the amazing photos of sourdough bread, cakes, pies and other goodies are any indication! Hobbies such as knitting, woodworking, and gardening, that were long-ago cast aside due to lack of interest or time, are being resurrected, the forgotten simple pleasures filling in the gaps left by less fulfilling (and often more expensive) distractions.

Some people have a really hard time with quiet and introspection. Often, this is an indication that they have unprocessed emotions, ‘baggage’, if you will, from previous experiences; things they haven’t properly worked through and accepted. For these individuals, the pandemic has brought an extra level of discomfort, as many of the usual distractions that worked in the past to keep those feelings at bay have no longer been available to them. There’s only so many hours of Netflix a person can watch before going a bit stir-crazy, and these people are likely among those clamouring for things to go ‘back to normal’ as quickly as possible.

Of course, many people have recently endured hardship due to job loss. This can stir up a range of emotions:

  • Fear (How will I pay my bills? Will I lose my home?);
  • Anger (Why is the CEO still getting that big bonus, while they kick me to the curb?);
  • Confusion (Without a job, I don’t know who I am);
  • Despair (I’m not qualified for any other job – I’ll never work again!).

But, some have realized that becoming unemployed was the very ‘kick in the pants’ they needed; they’d been feeling unfulfilled at work and had already been yearning for a career change. The timing may not be the best…or is it?

I believe the Universe is always right on time with whatever lands on our plate.

I also believe that we are never given more than what we can handle.

Note, that doesn’t mean, necessarily, that we can handle it all by ourselves!

Thankfully, we don’t have to.

Any time we are going through a major transition in life, whether one that we’ve chosen, or one that’s been forced upon us, it’s always helpful to have a guide along the journey. A personal coach is trained to ask powerful questions, so we can figure out what we truly want, and set a plan in motion to get there.

Right now, many of us have both the time and the mental space to really focus on these questions, and a golden opportunity to craft a future that unleashes our full potential and that fills us with joy and wonder. There’s never been a better time to work with a coach, and to create the life you dream of…

What I call a Momentous Life

You may be wondering...where's the video?

I recently took an informal poll of my followers, and learned that a significant number of you prefer a written blog over the video format.

As a writer at heart, this gave me no end of joy to hear. And so, I'm honouring that request going forward.

If you're a video fan, don't worry! I'll still be creating and posting video content on my YouTube Channel, and going "live" on Facebook and Instagram occasionally, as I have in the past. But those will be "extra" value pieces, above and beyond the blog.

As always, I love to hear from my audience, so please do share your thoughts on today's message in the comments below. Let's continue the conversation!

Peace and love,
xo
